Welcome to the Course
Welcome...or welcome back! Whichever way, much of what is ahead is either new, or full of different expectations. This handbook provides you with information that you will need on your course. You should find it helpful when you first start, when you are preparing for assessment and at any time that you need help or advice in connection with your studies here. You will have access to Module Handbooks for each module you study on your course and you'll meet your level tutor who is your main point of contact for any course related issues.
The course team is looking forward to working with you this year and we hope that your time studying with us at Leeds Beckett University is both enjoyable and successful.

- Following the lifting of all pandemic restrictions and advice from the Department for Education, we currently anticipate that no social distancing measures will be in place on campus during the 2023/24 academic year, enabling a normal on-campus experience. Taught sessions, both mandatory and optional, will be scheduled and included in your online timetable. Depending on your course, this may also include scheduled online teaching and learning sessions where student engagement is required at a specified time or tutor pre-recorded lectures.

Course Overview
The aims of the programme are to cultivate creative scholarship that is critical, reflective and reflexive; enabling students to understand the interaction between psychology and the social. Students will be equipped to engage with, share in, contribute to and be critical of the intellectual tradition of Psychology. The course team will encourage and develop interdisciplinary approaches that will inform and enrich the student's study of Psychology. Student are thereby enabled to appropriately apply the insights of social psychology in order to clarify a range of historical, political, social and cultural issues. Students are provided with approaches and paradigms that will inform them of the bi-directional relationships between psychology and society, as well as between the individual and the communal.
The programme aims to encourage students to critically reflect upon their roles and responsibilities as Psychologists within a given society. In doing so, ethnocentric attitudes that privilege Western approaches to Psychology and Society will be challenged. Students will get to appreciate that to study consciousness often involves, or leads to, a transformation of consciousness; and that these changes should be for the betterment of the individual and society. Overall, the programmes aims to enable and encourage students to develop erudition and accompanying scholarly and intellectual skills, including use of the written word, verbal proficiency, and use of information technology, allowing for fruitful participation in reasoned public discussions about the future of Society and to facilitate employment opportunities. Finally, students can develop critical thinking on the dynamics of scholarship.
This course is not accredited by the British Psychological Society.
1. Critically and creatively engage with the intellectual tradition of Social Psychology (via communication and collaboration with the broader scholarly community) and to locate this within the Social Sciences more generally, using wide a range of learning resources (including; online journals, e-books, media resources, academic networks).
2. Analyse the bi-directional relationships between Psychology and the social with the recognition that Social Psychology is both culturally and historically located. Students will cultivate an awareness of international/global perspectives on how the self and society is understood.
3. Appreciate and evaluate the central role of consciousness in Social Psychology.
4. Critically assess the implications of theoretical debates in Social Psychology from interdisciplinary perspectives that recognise its embedding in a social world.
5. Apply and critically reflect on Social Psychological insights to everyday events and encounters that demonstrate social responsibility, ethical commitment, empathy and enterprise.
Level 4
1. Demonstrate a good general knowledge and understanding of the well-established principles, issues, concepts and theories in Psychology and related areas of study.
2. Demonstrate the ability to relate underlying concepts and principles to a variety of contexts.
3. Demonstrate a foundational knowledge of social science research methodology and its practical application.
4. Demonstrate foundational knowledge in the presentation and evaluation of qualitative and quantitative data.
5. Engage in basic research and write up the results of the research.
6. Identify and reflect on your learning needs.
Assessment & Feedback
The assessment balance and overall workload associated with this course are calculated from core modules and typical option module choices undertaken by students on the course. They have been reviewed and confirmed as representative by the Course Director although the specific option choices students make may influence both assessment and workload balance.
A standard module equates to 200 notional learning hours, which may be comprised of teaching, learning and assessment, any embedded placement activities and independent study. Modules may have more than one component of assessment.
Level 4 is assessed by coursework predominantly, with some practical assessments.
Level 5 is assessed by coursework predominantly, with some practical assessments.
Level 6 is assessed by coursework.
Please note the exam/assessment periods in the academic calendar and make sure that you are available during those periods. Further details of your schedule of examinations can be found on your timetable once the examination schedule is released. Coursework submission deadlines can normally be found on MyBeckett, on course noticeboards or in individual Module Handbooks/other module guides.

It is important for your progression and achievement that you submit all work for all assignments in a timely manner. It is also important that you keep copies of all work submitted until after you have graduated. You should also keep any receipts confirming the submission of assignments. In the event of your submitted work being lost you may be required to produce a copy of the work and submission receipt. If you are unable to do so, your work will not be marked.
It is important to note that submitting all assignments is a requirement of your course. Should you experience extenuating circumstances which prevent you from submitting on time please make yourself aware of the Mitigation and Extenuating Circumstances process. Without any form of extenuating circumstances, standard penalties apply for late submission of assessed work. Full details of the penalties for late submission of course work are available in section 3 of the Academic Regulations. Please check the penalties that apply to this course as some Professional, Statutory and Regulatory Body requirements may mean that different penalties apply.
If you have been recommended 'flexibility around deadlines' as a reasonable adjustment in a Reasonable Adjustment Plan, your Course Administrator will be able to advise you of the process.
You may be required to submit your written work via Turnitin; further information on Turnitin is available.
Assessed work will normally be returned with appropriate feedback within four weeks (20 working days) of your submission. This is to give tutors sufficient time to closely read your work and not just provide you with a mark but, importantly, provide you with constructive feedback that will help you with future work. In addition, we also have to apply internal and external moderation and second marking processes which take up some time. Each Module Handbook and MyBeckett will provide you with specific guidelines on how and when you will receive feedback on your assessments.
Results from module assessments and decisions on progression to the next level of study (e.g., from Level 4 to Level 5 of an undergraduate degree) or awards (if you are in the final level) are available on the Results Online system: https://www.leedsbeckett.ac.uk/student-information/exams-assessments-and-awards/results-online/.
Results will appear in Results Online within five working days of the Progression and Award Board meeting (the meeting where your end of level outcome will be decided) or the Module Board meeting (the meeting where modular outcomes are decided).
If you are unsure about when you might receive your results or have queries relating to your results, you should contact your Course Administrator.
The University recognises that, from time to time, students may encounter issues which may prevent them from being able to submit or take assessment. If you have not passed a module at the first attempt, or you have not submitted all components, you will be eligible for re-assessment. See your Module Handbook for details of the relevant re-assessment process (e.g., whether it is coursework, an examination, a presentation or other form of assessment/when it will take place/what the deadline is). You will be advised via Results Online of your options for re-assessment. You are advised to contact your Course Director, Course Administrator or Academic Advisor for any necessary clarification.

Teaching & Learning
The Social Psychology course team are aware that different learning and teaching activities suit different students' learning styles and are committed to the use of a variety of teaching practices in order to promote active learning and student engagement on the course. The team is committed to using blended teaching and learning activities and a variety of assessment practices in order to promote active learning and student engagement on the course, as well as prepare them for the world as an alumni.
The learning and teaching activities on this course are broad and varied. They include the following: lectures, seminars, workshops, library work, seminar and workshop preparation, film (and other media) showings, external speakers, online learning, fieldwork, group activities and interactive classroom learning tools. Formal teaching might also take place via synchronous and asynchronous teaching inputs with guided learning opportunities for students both as individuals and in groups (where appropriate). More informally, the team also provides one-to-one support via individual meetings to discuss feedback or assignments.
Seminars are environments in which students are encouraged to debate, question and argue over the chosen topic for discussion in so doing students develop the skills of critical questioning and thinking as well as the confidence to express their informed views. Collaborative work amongst students which is presented more formally as the course progresses is an integral part of the course and aimed at developing students' skills and confidence in the presentation of knowledge and the self. Students are encouraged to use appropriate digital tools for collaboration.
As far as assessment is concerned a range of assessment tools are used reflecting both the diversity of knowledge and skills being assessed, and the need to provide students with a range of means of demonstrating their achievement of Learning Outcomes, assessment methods include written assignments, group presentations, learning logs, and reports. In order to assist students in managing their assessment workload, assessments are arranged over an agreed period of time by module tutors.

Attendance & Absence
The University expects you to attend and contribute fully to all mandatory sessions on your timetable as set out in your student contract. Engagement in your lectures, seminars and practicals is an important part of your learning - contributing both to the University community and the learning experience of your fellow students on the course. This includes engagement in scheduled virtual learning and activities and meetings in online environments related to your studies.
We monitor your engagement at the University as regular attendance and academic achievement are closely linked. Moreover, by monitoring your engagement and attendance we can identify students who may need our guidance or support at an early stage to help them progress in their studies. This is part of our commitment to ensuring an excellent education and experience and supporting your success at Leeds Beckett.
The University does understand that from time to time there is good reason why you cannot attend a class, and in this instance you must contact your School office to let them know. This may then be recorded as an 'authorised absence'.
Please note that any attendance reports can be shared with you and your Course team. You might be asked to contact your School office so that appropriate academic or pastoral support can be offered, should your attendance record give cause for concern.
Our most important aim is to support your studies, but we are also required to report attendance to various external bodies such as the Student Loan Company and the Home Office. There are measures in place for students who seek to falsely register either their own or fellow students' attendance.

You must notify your Course Administrator if you are absent (for example for an interview, emergency unforeseen circumstances, or for compassionate leave). If you are going to apply for mitigation you will need to provide written evidence of the reason for your absence.

If you are unable to study because of another illness for more than 14 consecutive days (including weekends), you must provide us with a Fit Note.
You can send a digital copy of your Fit Note to your Course Administrator, and then send the original by post.
If you are absent through illness on the day of an examination or assignment deadline and you intend to apply for mitigation, you must also provide us with details as possible. Your submission for mitigation may be made online and the circumstances surrounding it may be self-certified unless your period of absence is prolonged. Generally, all absences of 2 weeks or more will require the submission of verifiable documentary evidence.

Any Leeds Beckett student who suspects they may have, or have been diagnosed as having a serious infectious disease such as coronavirus, Mumps, TB, measles, meningitis or chicken pox should not attend campus. For notifiable diseases, students should notify their Course Director or Course Administrator as soon as possible giving information regarding which groups of students (and/or colleagues and clients on placements) you have been in contact with and when. For some diseases, such as TB and meningitis, your doctor and our Student Wellbeing Team have a responsibility to notify the West Yorkshire Public Health Protection Team who may also wish to speak to you (or your family) to determine if others require screening or medication. Skills, Employability & Graduate Opportunities
The course helps students develop a wide-range of skills including: critical thinking, evaluative, presentational, independent-learning, team-working, organisational, employability and research-based skills. These resources are designed for students to browse and use independently. There are 12 major themes covered by the Skills for Learning Web site: - Assessment, Academic Communication, Employability, Enterprise, group Skills, Information Technology, Learning and Teaching, Maths, Personal Development, Reflection, and Research.
Skills for Learning also provides co-ordinated support across the University for the development of students' literacy, numeracy and IT skills through the delivery of workshops and tutorials for students. It is aimed at supporting student transition to higher education, enhancing student recruitment, aiding student retention as well as improving student performance.
You will have opportunities to gain recognition during your time at Leeds Beckett University for the extra activities you do in addition to your studies, including volunteering, student societies, playing in our University sports teams and being a Course Representative.
By joining a society with Leeds Beckett Students' Union, you can make new friends, have fun, try something new and enhance your CV - societies provide a great opportunity to learn new skills and improve your existing ones. The BA (Hons) Social Psychology degree provides opportunities for students to develop the graduate attributes of digital literacy, enterprise and global outlook throughout the course of the degree. The modules at each level for each attribute are listed below and examples of the assessment and module activities will clarify how you will see and work with the attributes through your course.
The Social Psychology degree represents a genuinely international Psychology programme which includes, integrates and emphasises cross-cultural perspectives and approaches. A number of members of the course team specialise in cross-cultural Psychology (with particular expertise in Chinese and Indian culture), issues of ethnicity and racism, and recognise more generally the challenges of and opportunities offered by social and theoretical diversity. These tenets of inclusion and a positive recognition of marginalised groups, individual and ideas are inscribed at the heart of our teaching.
A global outlook, in the sense of encouraging students to become aware and understand people with different beliefs, behaviours, values and aspirations is embedded in modules such as; Doing Psychology (L4), Mind, Self and Culture (L4), Interdisciplinary Psychology (L4), Psychosocial Development (L4), Critical Social Psychology (L5), Environmental Psychology (L5), Parapsychology (L5), Psychoanalytic Contributions (L5), Transpersonal Psychology - Psychonautics (L6), Framing Madness (L6) and Social Psychology of Music (L6) all provide a focus on gender, class, cultural and spiritual variety; such modules challenge students to reflect on their own background and assumptions and in so doing develop an awareness of other, diverse backgrounds and experiences.
Furthermore modules such as; Doing Psychology (L4), Positive Psychology (L5) and Transpersonal Psychology - Psychonautics (L6) use reflective journals as a form of assessment, this encourages students to reflect upon their own background and experience as well as the background and experience of others. A key feature of teaching on the Social Psychology degree is to introduce students to a variety of, often conflicting, perspectives that students are encouraged to assess and evaluate and in turn come to their own judgement. One of the key features identified as a PDP attribute within the Social Psychology course is that of cross-cultural capability, social and ethical awareness.
An important aim within the Social Psychology degree is to encourage and assist students to explore the culture and values of others and be capable of rational and courteous discussion in support of their own views. The seminar is a key context within which students are encouraged to develop such awareness and acceptance. The seminar assessment practices such as group work towards a presentation, allow students to interact with others, many of whom will be from a different background than themselves.
Erasmus and International students bring their own particular perspectives and experiences to the course and are encouraged to share this in seminar discussions. In the second semester of L5 all Social Psychology students are given the opportunity to study abroad through the Erasmus scheme and the links that the School has established with several European Universities and thus be given the opportunity to experience at first hand different cultures.
As far as embedding enterprise within the Social Psychology curriculum, enterprise in the sense of problem- solving skills, investigatory skills, resourcefulness and initiative as well as developing self-confidence, the use of written assignments at all levels of the course present students with the need to use information communications technology in order to find appropriate and relevant academic material, to then analyse this material in terms of the assignment question set and produce a well written and coherent answer to the problem set. The written assignments assess skills such as analysis, synthesis, initiative and written communication.
Particularly good examples of embedding enterprise are the Doing Psychology module with its emphasis on self-awareness, being open to feedback, personal reflection and cultivating self-confidence; Psychology of Persuasion module (L5) with its emphasis on thinking creatively, creating opportunities and innovation and Researching Psychology with its emphasis on grounding and applying theoretical ideas to real world situations.
Additionally the Dissertation at L6 allows the student to self-manage, with supervisor support, a yearlong project in which they are called upon to apply, as well as develop, the analytical, self-management and investigatory skills they have developed throughout the course. Whilst this is a challenging experience students often develop a stronger sense of self-confidence and achievement at its completion.
Assessment practices such as group work for presentations at each level of the course, provide students with the opportunity to develop group working, leadership and creative thinking skills as well as developing the skills and confidence required to present the results of their research to an audience. The use of assessment practices such as written assignments, group presentations and the dissertation ensures that students implicitly develop the appropriate enterprise skills of problem solving, self-management, team working, resourcefulness, analysis and investigation.
In terms of developing digital literacy modules such as Doing Psychology (L4), Researching Society (L4), Researching Psychology (L5) and the Dissertation (L6) all involve formal sessions teaching students how to use appropriate e-tools in order to locate, access, evaluate and utilise diverse information sources that facilitate their learning.
The standard use of the University's VLE (MyBeckett), email, the across-module use of online submissions and Turnitin and the proposed use of e-portfolios for the Personal Development Planning component of the L4 module, Doing Psychology are further examples of how digital literacy is embedded within the student experience of the Social Psychology degree. Further examples include encouraging the development of information literacy and digital scholarship; enabling students to locate academically viable online materials and effectively evaluate their content.
As our degree also emphasises social context, media literacy via the analysis of professional communications and cultural resources will also be used. The degree already has a popular online presence on Facebook inviting communication and collaboration through networking with various professional and academic communities.
The Academic Librarian can provide further support for digital literacy, for example by providing inductions and further information skills sessions on finding and evaluating digital sources of information in an effective and discerning manner.
All students are also able to access the optional Work-Based Learning in Sociology module which provides students with an opportunity to engage with the practice of Sociology or Social Psychology in a 'real world' context through a period of work-based learning and, in doing so, gain practical experience of a professional work area related to their course of study.
Additionally our students are signposted to a variety of volunteering opportunities available through the students union and the volunteering and partnerships offices which enable them to gain further work related learning and employability skills. Our students also have access to the careers service and online employability resources which help to prepare them for job applications and interviews and critically evaluate their employment prospects and identify potential opportunities.
A degree in Social Psychology provides excellent preparation for a wide range of careers in commercial or healthcare settings, management and human resources, education, charities, community and social work, financial services, and psychological research as well as the voluntary sector.
This course also provides a foundation for specialised postgraduate study and further professional training, potentially leading to careers in clinical and counselling psychology, educational, occupational, forensic or health psychology.
Graduates from this course embark on a number of different career paths and there are a number of further study options that are open to students who have studied Social Psychology. Learning Support
If you have a question or a problem relating to your course, your Course Administrator is there to help you. Course Administrators work closely with academic staff and can make referrals to teaching staff or to specialist professional services as appropriate. They can give you a confirmation of attendance letter, and a transcript. What should I do next?

The Library Academic Support Team can help you develop your academic skills such as critical thinking, academic writing and analysing data, and research skills such as how to find, use and evaluate information for your studies. OneDrive Leeds Beckett is your individual file storage with 1TB of storage space. With OneDrive you can access and share your files across your devices. The Advice Service at LBSU is a confidential, non-judgmental service run by professional advisers.

All modules contain a variety of learning resources which are indicated in the module handbook and online in MyBeckett where you can find a virtual learning environment populated by individual module tutors. Leeds Beckett University also has well stocked libraries, both at City Campus and at Headingley Campus where books can be read within the 24 hour library, loaned on a regular loan as well as sometimes as short term loans.
Student Voice
We are committed to working in partnership with you and the Students' Union to provide you with an inclusive, safe and engaging learning environment which is conducive to study for all our students and our staff. An important element of your time studying with us is your engagement in developing your learning. Your engagement and attendance on your course enables you to further your learning and supports your achievement, course completion and aspirations for the future. There is an expectation that students will attend, engage in their learning and submit on time for assessment. We provide support for you to maximise your time studying with us and to develop your learning, skills and abilities to support you in your chosen career path.
We seek active participation by all our students in the continuous enhancement of our courses and through our monitoring, annual review and enhancement processes. Course Representatives (Reps) at undergraduate and postgraduate taught levels are student volunteers who represent you in formal and informal meetings with the University, and follow up on actions that have occurred because of student feedback.
